Where to Stay in Bandar Seri Begawan

A small city with a short list of hotels — which makes choosing the right area the main decision.

Bandar Seri Begawan has only a few dozen hotels, and with public transport so limited, where you stay decides how you spend your time. Pick the area first.

The city centre lets you walk to the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the waterfront and the water taxis, but it is very quiet at night. Gadong is where locals shop and eat, with the night market on the doorstep. Jerudong and the coast mean resort life at the Empire or a simple base near the beaches and the Labuan ferry. And Berakas is for early flights.

How to choose

  • First visit, one or two nights? The city centre, within walking distance of the waterfront.
  • Here to eat and shop? Gadong, beside The Mall and the night market.
  • Want a holiday within the holiday? The Empire at Jerudong — add a night or two at the end of the trip.
  • With children? A hotel with a pool in Gadong or the centre, or the Empire’s lagoon pools.
  • Catching the Labuan ferry or an early flight? Sleep near Serasa or in Berakas.

Booking tips

  • Ask whether your hotel runs a shuttle to the centre or the airport — several do, and it saves on rides.
  • Hotels fill up, and prices rise, around Hari Raya, the Sultan’s birthday in July and major state events.
  • No hotel in Brunei serves alcohol. Minibars are soft drinks only.
  • During Ramadan, hotel restaurants are the easiest place for visitors to eat during the day.
  • For Ulu Temburong, consider one night at a lodge in Temburong rather than a long day trip.

Plan your Brunei days

Turn a stopover in Bandar Seri Begawan into the surprise of your Borneo trip

Stand under the golden dome of the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, cross to Kampong Ayer by water taxi, look for proboscis monkeys in the mangroves at dusk and climb above the rainforest canopy in Ulu Temburong. Compare the available experiences and book in a couple of taps.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Bandar Seri Begawan?

For most visitors, the city centre: you can walk to the main mosque, the waterfront and the museums. Choose Gadong if evenings and food matter more to you than walking to the sights.

Is The Empire Brunei worth it?

If you want a beach resort, yes — it is by far the most impressive hotel in the country. It is 20 minutes from the city, so it suits a relaxed stay better than a packed sightseeing schedule.

How much do hotels cost in Brunei?

Hostel beds and simple rooms start from around US$20–30, good mid-range hotels from about US$40–90, and the five-star hotels from roughly US$110 to US$250 a night depending on dates.

Do hotels in Brunei serve alcohol?

No. Alcohol is not sold anywhere in Brunei, including hotels.

Should I stay near the airport?

Only for a very early flight or a late arrival. The airport is just 15–20 minutes from the centre, so most travellers are better off in town.
