Why Bandar Seri Begawan?

Small, calm and unlike anywhere else in Borneo

Bandar Seri Begawan — “BSB” to everyone who lives there — is the capital of Brunei Darussalam, a small, oil-rich sultanate on the north coast of Borneo. It is one of Southeast Asia’s least hurried capitals: no traffic chaos, no touts, and two of the region’s most beautiful mosques within a short drive of each other.

Across the river lies Kampong Ayer, a centuries-old settlement built entirely on stilts, reached by water taxi for about a dollar. Upstream, proboscis monkeys feed in the mangroves at dusk, and a long bridge now links the city to the rainforest of Ulu Temburong. Two or three days is enough to see it well — provided you know the local rules, which this guide explains plainly.

Visiting Bandar Seri Begawan: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is Bandar Seri Begawan worth visiting?

Yes, for two or three days. It is a small, quiet capital rather than a big-city destination, but the mosques, Kampong Ayer, the river wildlife and Ulu Temburong make it quite different from neighbouring Sabah and Sarawak. A guided tour makes the first day easier — compare the best ones here.

How many days do I need?

One full day covers the two great mosques, Kampong Ayer and the Royal Regalia Museum, with a river safari at dusk. Add a second day for Ulu Temburong National Park and a third for the museums, the night market and the coast.

Can I drink alcohol in Brunei?

Alcohol is not sold anywhere in Brunei. Non-Muslim adult visitors may bring in a limited duty-free allowance for private consumption and must declare it on arrival. See the rules section of our travel guide.

How do I get around without a car?

The city centre is walkable, water taxis cross the river and the Dart ride-hailing app covers the rest. Public buses are cheap but infrequent and stop in the early evening. Details in our getting there guide.

Is this the official Brunei tourism website?

No. BandarSeriBegawan.com is an independent travel guide and is not affiliated with the Government of Brunei Darussalam or any tourism board. See our about page.
